Notes
This summary has been simplified for clarity.
Unit formation/disbandment dates are given, with the exception of 87 Squadron where
the dates shown are those of detachments from the Squadron to Scilly.
It will be appreciated that the Royal Air Force was formed on 1 April 1918 from the
Royal Naval Air Service and the Royal Flying Corps.
The Union Flag (normally referred to as the Union Jack) is shown for the period
of the Royal Air Force in the Great War, as the RAF Ensign was not instituted until
March 1921.
